Common Causes of Fatigue or Exhaustion

Causes of Fatigue

Recognizing the most common causes of fatigue and exhaustion is important to understanding exhaustion. Many people suffer from this syndrome without being aware that they do. If you are more aware of these common causes, you can recognize the symptoms in yourself and take action to get help, which will help prevent having this terrible syndrome manifest itself in your life in the first place.
Physical exertion without adequate rest. If you workout, especially with weights or other techniques to build muscle and strength, you have to realize that you are tearing down your muscles when you work out. You need to get plenty of rest and sufficient food to recharge your body and actually let it rebuild into a stronger body. If you don't, you will wear yourself down and you could begin to suffer from exhaustion. Also, try to avoid physical exertion that you aren't confident you are fit enough to perform.
  • Overworking--One of the common causes of fatigue. All work and no play makes you susceptible to exhaustion. Too much work can lead you to neglect your nutrition or physical health. You can also become mentally and emotionally depleted as you have too little personal, reflection, and relationship time. Read more about Job Stress.
  • Stress--stress can take on a wide array of forms. High levels of stress can drastically alter your moods, interfere with your concentration, and lead you into behaviors that can drag you down such as drinking too much or becoming dependent on drugs. With stress, the best thing you can do is whatever you need to to alleviate the stressful situation rather than hiding from it or suppressing yourself so that you are the victim of it. • Too much or too little stimulation--some people need constant stimulation in order to have a joyful life, and without it they become down and blue and this can lead to exhaustion. For instance, some people need to read or be creative all the time. On the other hand, some people are being suffocated by their perceived need to be multitaskers, or they are juggling too many things in their personal life at one time.
  • Insomnia--typically insomnia is temporary, but if it lasts for a few weeks or longer it can sap you dry of almost all of your energy which, needless to say, can lead to exhaustion for the clearest of reasons. Read more about Sleep Disorders.
  • Depression--If you are down all the time and you can't find joy in most or all of the things you normally do take joy or pleasure in, you likely suffer from depression, which has exhaustion as one of its components. You should talk to a doctor right away and you may need medication. Read more about Depression
  • Anxiety attacks--these can suck you dry of your energy quickly. You may need to talk to a doctor and possibly be medicated for these attacks.
  • Having a new baby--If you've just become a parent (possibly again), this fact can cause exhaustion for reasons that you can probably imagine.
  • Medical or health conditions. Read more about Diabetes Fatigue and Cancer Related Fatigue.
  • Side effects from some medications.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), which is the most severe form of exhaustion. Read more about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
  • Caregiver Stress Caregiver Stress is a syndrome that can lead to exhaustion and has some traits in common with exhaustion. In fact, Caregiver Stress is a mixture of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. Read more about Caregiver Stress.
