One of the diseases or syndromes that can bring on exhaustion is clinical depression. Now, clinical depression is not the same as the blues or the feelings of grief that linger for sometimes days on end after a tragedy such as the death of a loved one. Being clinically depressed means you are depressed nearly all day, every day, for at least two weeks. Almost twice as many women as men suffer from depression, but at the same time the syndrome when it does occur in men is significantly under-diagnosed and far more likely to go unrecognized.Go to Major Depression Disorder
What qualifies as being depressed? Again, it's not a down mood or "the blues". There are many different indicators that likely mean you should be diagnosed as being clinically depressed.
Feeling constantly fatigued (which is also a clear sign of exhaustion).
Weight gain, or weight loss, in one month's time that equals at least 5% of what your body weight was at the start of the month
Strong feelings of being worthless or feeling strong guilt about something on a daily basis
Persistent thoughts about killing yourself or dying--not being afraid of dying, but vividly imagining it happening to you.
Poor concentration, loss of your usual memory capacity, or constant confusion (more overlap with exhaustion).
Anhedonia--the loss of pleasure or joy in everything that usually stimulates these feelings in you, including sex and endeavors at which you excel (this, too, is a sign of exhaustion). You might need someone who is close to you to point out that you seem to be suffering from anhedonia before you can see it for yourself.
Feelings of being unable to sit still, relax, or slow down; or, the polar opposite, seeming to be unable to do anything at your usual clip or pace.
Clinical depression is made worse by the use of either caffeine or similar stimulants or alcohol (or other depressant like sleeping pills). Caffeine is an artificial mean of mood elevation, and when it wears off you can crash, and feel even worse than you did before. Alcohol is itself a depressant, so it may seem to take your thoughts away from depressing images, but it's only strengthening your emotions of depression at the same time. Sleeping pills offer only an artificial escape; since they do nothing to get at the root of the problem, they can make you feel worse when you become more alert, since you felt like you had a temporary "cure", only to be thrust back into blackness. Sleeping pills also drain you of energy, which is depressed feelings.
Being depressed like this can leave you feeling utterly drained, which is what exhaustion is. If you believe you may be clinically depressed, it is crucial that you get to a doctor immediately to see if that is your syndrome. You may need medications to help you out of the depression. Some all-natural "alternative" treatments for depression also can be effective, such as getting more exercise, getting outdoors in a natural setting more often, working less strenuously, or changing your diet to a healthier one; but while these are excellent ways of preventing depression, if you already have it they aren't likely to work to get you out of it.
Clinical depression is categorized as a major depressive disorder, as well as a mental disorder. With the depression terminology being very ambiguous, it therefore falls under the medicine and psychology categories as a syndrome.
A person who is clinical depressed, or having a major depressive episode, usually affects their:
